Buffalo Bulls

The Buffalo Bulls have a long history of playing ball on the gridiron. The Bulls have played college football since 1894, when fourteen UB Medical students formed the first University of Buffalo football team. By 1896, the U of Buffalo eleven were a local force in Western New York football playing collegiate and club teams and finishing the season with an impressive 9–1–2 record. In 1897, C. W. Dibble coached UB to a perfect 7–0–0 record beating Syracuse twice. In 1899, Bemus Pierce coached UB to a 6–0 record. This likely made Pierce the first American Indian head coach in college football.

The origin of the Bulls nickname is interesting. Sources indicate that the University of Buffalo's sports teams were known as the Buffalo Bison until the 1930s, when the school decided to change their name to the Bulls to avoid confusion with several professional sports teams of the same name.

  • The Buffalo Bulls football team is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
  • THe Bulls have won 2 MAC championships (1964, 2008).
  • The Bulls have played in 2 bowl games, losing both (1965 Tangerine Bowl, 2008 International Bowl).
  • The Bulls have had 4 Hall of Fame coaches: Glenn Killinger, Jim Killion, Bob Griffin, and Dick MacPherson.
  • The Bulls have had 20 All-Americans.

the 1958 Buffalo University Bulls

When the University of Buffalo Bulls finished their 1958 season 8-1, the team was invited to play in the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida. All of the players — including two African Americans — were justifiably proud. However, there was one caveat: the Bulls could come to Orlando and face powerful Florida State — but they would have to leave the black players, Willie Evans and Mike Wilson, behind.

Buffalo Bulls' football history podcast

Today we discuss the college football history of the Buffalo Bulls. This program, that dates back to the 1800s, and in their long history, has tasted both perfection and bitter defeat. One perfect coach, four stellar coaches, one win to catapult the program to its only appearance in the final AP Poll, one collapse to secure a bowl loss, one offensive meltdown to derail an undefeated-untied season, one furious comeback that fell short, five stellar teams, one perfect team, one ferocious linebacke
